Poças 1918. Very Old Tawny Port

29 Nov 2018 in  Wine
In the year of our centenary, we launched a Very Old Tawny Port, a symbolic moment that was a celebration and tribute to the region and to the founder of the company, Manoel Domingues Poças Júnior.
The recently launched Poças 1918 arrived at Poças when the company’s founder, Manoel Domingues Poças Júnior, received Quinta das Quartas as payment for a debt. Among the estate received, there was a lot of Port Wines that was kept and is now between 90 and 100 years old.
We are now putting this wine on the market, 100 units only, in a bottle produced by Vista Alegre, inside a wooden box whose design was inspired by the old liqueur of our founder.
Poças 1918 has the fascinating complexity, texture and personality of very old Port wines, says our winemaker Jorge Pintão, also remembering the wine heritage of the region: “They are extraordinary wines that Douro managed to preserve, generation after generation, treasures stored and rarities I had the joy of tasting.” Some of them with brand names, others from anonymous farmers, these very old Port wines “are in our memory and embody intense affections, as with Poças 1918, in my case,” he adds. “It’s like keeping a family jewel,” he concludes.
See below the pictures of our “jewel”.

Sep 15, 2018

The magazine Revista de Vinhos published an article about our Porto Vintage 2016 wines, the year with the largest Vintage declaration ever (63 brands). Our newly released Poças Vintage 2016 has received 18 points and was described as: “Dense and impenetrable ruby. Very fresh and springy nose, with elegant notes of blackberry, black plum, chocolate, coffee steam, tobacco leaf and spices. The mouth is silky, enveloping, tasty, with round but firm tannins, in an elegant profile, in which stands out the strength of the fruit and the spicy notes. A Vintage in a contemporary style, tamed and ready to drink, but which will continue to grow in the bottle over the coming decades.”
Our winemaker Jorge Pintão is seen as one of the oenologists who is leaving a mark in Port Wine.
ORIGIN: Portugal – Douro Demarcated Region

Learn about our Quinta de Vale de cavalos

Nov 21, 2018

Located in Numão, a prime winemaking region, all the vineyards are planted with the finest varieties of vines. Quinta de Vale de Cavalos was purchased in 1988 and boasts approximately 51 hectares of land under vines, divided in three lots: Ribeira Teja, Catapereiro, Tanque and Zoc.

The rolling land requires no supporting walls, which makes working the vineyards that much easier. Ribeira Teja’s proximity to a reservoir created by a recently-built dam, together with a sophisticated drip irrigation system, are essential to overcoming the effects of the frequent droughts the region that suffers from the lowest annual rainfall in Portugal.
