Poças 1918. Very Old Tawny Port

In the year of our centenary, we launched a Very Old Tawny Port, a symbolic moment that was a celebration and tribute to the region and to the founder of the company, Manoel Domingues Poças Júnior.
The recently launched Poças 1918 arrived at Poças when the company’s founder, Manoel Domingues Poças Júnior, received Quinta das Quartas as payment for a debt. Among the estate received, there was a lot of Port Wines that was kept and is now between 90 and 100 years old.
We are now putting this wine on the market, 100 units only, in a bottle produced by Vista Alegre, inside a wooden box whose design was inspired by the old liqueur of our founder.
Poças 1918 has the fascinating complexity, texture and personality of very old Port wines, says our winemaker Jorge Pintão, also remembering the wine heritage of the region: “They are extraordinary wines that Douro managed to preserve, generation after generation, treasures stored and rarities I had the joy of tasting.” Some of them with brand names, others from anonymous farmers, these very old Port wines “are in our memory and embody intense affections, as with Poças 1918, in my case,” he adds. “It’s like keeping a family jewel,” he concludes.

New launch: Poças Branco da Ribeira 2017

Our greatest release of the year is the one of the new top-of-the-range Branco da Ribeira 2017, which has been awarded 93 points in its debut from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

Critic Mark Squires describes our new white as follows:

What do you get by trading up here? Well, it has more oak, but the Arinto’s big acidity slices and dices the wood effortlessly. It is very clean. Showing a lot of bite on the finish and that fine acidity, this is precise, elegant and fairly intense. The finish is very long. In a tough year, this seems pretty miraculous. It has some upside potential too. It certainly is not done developing—which is a good and necessary thing to say about a young wine in this price range. It may even age better than anticipated. Overall, it is a pretty stunning debut”.

2018: A year of top wine news

The wine launching that we held this month in Lisbon was very special, as we used the celebration of the centenary of Poças for the launch of top quality DOC Douro wines.
Branco da Ribeira 2017 (you can read here the review by Mark Squires, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate), our new top-of-the-range, presents itself with volume and very high acidity, reflecting the place where it comes from, a plot of the Quinta Vale de Cavalos, in Numão, in the Upper Douro, at 520 meters of altitude, from granite soils which are uncommon in the Douro.
Símbolo 2015 is the top-of-the-range red of our centenary, in its second edition. Produced from grapes harvested at Quinta de Santa Bárbara in Upper Corgo, the new Símbolo reflects the wine year of 2015, with full maturation earlier than in 2014, providing a powerful wine that already has a full aromatic expression. A toast from nature to the 100 years of Poças, as our winemaker Jorge Pintão puts it: “Símbolo 2015 is very complete and is already very pleasant to be tasted”.

Learn about our Quinta de Santa Bárbara

This quinta, planted with approximately 33 ha of vines and a lovely walled orange grove, produces some of Poças’ finest Vintages and LBV Ports under the Quinta de Santa Bárbara label. The name of the property comes from an earlier quinta that boasts a chapel to this saint and an astounding panoramic landscape view of Peso da Régua.

The building of a road that divided the original quinta led to the purchase of the present wine estate in 1999. When it was purchased, only a fourth of the total estate was planted with old vines. The entire property was later planted using the most modern techniques and the finest varietals.
