Quinta das Quartas is the Poças winemaking centre. Planted with more than 2.5 ha of vines, this quinta is noted for its immense wine lodge where the firm’s Port Wine is aged. Up 25,000 hectolitres of wines are stored in wooden casks ranging in size from 267-Litre hogsheads to 88,000-Litre vats. Since 1996 the wines from all of Poças’ quintas have been made at this modern winery – a total of 1.1 million Litres of wine. The property also boasts a small museum where one can see the original granite treading tanks dating from 1873.

Manoel Poças Júnior was particularly fond of his first wine estate in the Douro. He visited the quinta almost every week, walking the last 700 metres on foot over rocky paths. Sadly his dream of one day being able to drive right up to the property never came true as the present road was only built much later.

Learn about our Quinta de Santa Bárbara

This quinta, planted with approximately 33 ha of vines and a lovely walled orange grove, produces some of Poças’ finest Vintages and LBV Ports under the Quinta de Santa Bárbara label. The name of the property comes from an earlier quinta that boasts a chapel to this saint and an astounding panoramic landscape view of Peso da Régua.

The building of a road that divided the original quinta led to the purchase of the present wine estate in 1999. When it was purchased, only a fourth of the total estate was planted with old vines. The entire property was later planted using the most modern techniques and the finest varietals.

We celebrated 100 years with our team!

Last Friday we celebrated 100 years with our team! It was thanks to the commitment and dedication of generations of employees that we were able to celebrate our centenary this year.

Poças Vintage 2016

The magazine Revista de Vinhos published an article about our Porto Vintage 2016 wines, the year with the largest Vintage declaration ever (63 brands). Our newly released Poças Vintage 2016 has received 18 points and was described as: “Dense and impenetrable ruby. Very fresh and springy nose, with elegant notes of blackberry, black plum, chocolate, coffee steam, tobacco leaf and spices. The mouth is silky, enveloping, tasty, with round but firm tannins, in an elegant profile, in which stands out the strength of the fruit and the spicy notes. A Vintage in a contemporary style, tamed and ready to drink, but which will continue to grow in the bottle over the coming decades.”
Our winemaker Jorge Pintão is seen as one of the oenologists who is leaving a mark in Port Wine.
ORIGIN: Portugal – Douro Demarcated Region
DESCRIPTION: A single harvest Port wine, produced only in years of exceptional quality. Aged in oak barrels, it is bottled between the second and third year after harvest. During aging in the bottle, it will gradually acquire the extraordinary style of a great wine of guard.
PAIRING: Ideal as a dessert or convivial wine, it pairs with very good quality cheeses, desserts and chocolates. Serve at room temperature (18ºC) after carefully decanted. It can be consumed straight away, or await a positive evolution in the bottle.
